Cold-Weather Motorcycle Riding Tips
No one will deny that Canadian winters can get really cold, and if you’re a motorcyclist, you’re going to need some strategies to ride in below-freezing temperatures and bad weather safely. Winter weather presents the motorcycle rider with a host of challenges, from staying warm to keeping the bike upright on icy roads. Here are our tips on how to make cold-weather riding easier this winter.
Dress in Layers
Your standard motorcycle gear probably won’t cut the mustard when winter hits. An insulated riding suit or separate pants and jacket is ideal, along with layered clothing underneath it. The nice thing about layers is that you can add or remove them as needed. Begin with long underwear or a thermal top and leggings, then add a light sweater in wool or fleece and jeans or other pants. Don’t forget to invest in thick wool socks, insulated riding boots, insulated gloves, a scarf and knit hat or a balaclava to keep your extremities warm and cozy.
Check Over Your Bike
Your tires will be the most important part of your motorcycle to check, since you lose pressure in them as the temperature drops. You’ll want to keep your tire-pressure gauge handy so that you can air up your tires as needed. It may be prudent to swap out your tires for special snow tires that offer better traction on wet and icy roads.
You’ll also want to make sure that your fuel tank is always filled up and that your oil is clean and fresh. Testing your lights and brakes is also advisable before a ride, just to make sure that nothing is amiss. Exercise Caution When Riding
It’s best to avoid riding at night in the winter, since the temperature can get dangerously cold and limited visibility combined with bad road conditions can get you in serious trouble. Keep your speed low and steady, and don’t make sudden moves on wet roads. Listen to your body and pull over if you need to go indoors and get warm. Keep yourself hydrated and fed with regular snack breaks to keep your energy levels up.
