Installing an outboard motor isn’t the most technically challenging process out there, but there’s still plenty of ways that you can accidentally harm your vessel or outboard if you don’t know what you’re doing. With that in mind, the experts at J&B Cycle & Marine have created this guide to installing an outboard motor.

The Owner’s Manual

Start by looking at the owner’s manual to both your vessel and your outboard motor. Both will contain invaluable information in regards to installing an outboard motor in your boat. Moreover, this advice will be specific to your model, making it that much more valuable.

Mounting the Motor

The outboard should come with a mounting bracket that is designed to attach to the boat’s transom. There should be manufacturer provided instructions telling you how to attach the transom. Once all the screws are tight, secure it using a rope. We suggest tying one end of the rope around the hole in the mounting bracket and the other end to the boat.

Finding the Correct Angle

If you accidentally install your outboard motor at the wrong angle, your boat might start to tilt. Most models need the shaft of your outboard motor to be angled parallel to the stern, though you should double check your owner’s manual to see what it says. Some outboard models do not follow this convention.

Positioning the Fuel Tank

You’ll also need to find a place to set the outboard’s fuel tank. The ideal location will be well-ventilated and away from direct sunlight. Your fuel tank should be no less than six feet from the motor and no more than 3 feet below the fuel connector. When you find the right spot, secure the motor using ropes, bungee cords, or straps. If your model has mounting brackets, be sure to utilize them.

Final Notes

Finally, double-check that every part of your outboard motor is attached correctly and fully secured. Nothing should slide around or get loose while the boat is in motion. Take your boat for a test ride, taking things slow at first, to ensure that everything is functioning as it should.
