A History Of Yamaha

The Yamaha Motor Company has been the successful United States offshoot of Japan's Yamaha Corporation since 1955. They are renowned the world over for building reliable and powerful engines to go in their equally dependable, high-octane line of powersports vehicles.

In The Beginning

Back in 1887, the Yamaha Corporation was founded by Torakusu Yamaha in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. Yamaha began as a musical instrument manufacturer, building pianos and organs. This legacy is reflected in their logo, a trio of piano-tuning forks interwoven in a circle.

For years, pianos were the name of the game, but following the end of World War II and the subsequent economic downturn suffered by Japan and other countries, Yamaha was one of the factories that diversified its interests. Company president, Genichi Kawakami, decided to expand into the production of small engines, specifically those made for motorcycles.

The Yamaha Motor Company was born in the 1950s to produce its first line of two-stroke motorcycles. Four-stroke models would soon follow in 1968. These bikes were immediately popular and helped to increase the company's profile.

Further Expansion

By the 1980s, the Yamaha Motor Company was ready to dive into the PWC market, releasing the highly successful WaveRunner® 500 in 1986. They also began to produce All-Terrain Vehicles (also known as ATVs) for recreational and utility riding. Both PWC and powersports vehicles were relatively new fields in the 1980s, and Yamaha quickly became an expert in both. They continued to produce many different types of motorcycles that were highly sought-after by customers, too.

The 21st Century

Yamaha continues to produce its diverse lineup of products, from its original musical instrument offerings to consumer electronics to PWC, motorcycles and ATVs. Their powersports vehicles are renowned the world over and commonly used in many popular races, along with their motorcycles. Yamaha also produces snowmobiles for winter sports riding, and they continue to manufacture high-quality engines that are both powerful and highly efficient.
