Buying your first fishing boat isn’t a decision you should make lightly. You already know the joke about boats being “big holes in the water that we throw money into,” but it’s better to spend that money on aftermarket upgrades than repairs. There’s nothing wrong with buying a bargain-priced “handyman’s special,” but cheap boats always wind up becoming expensive no matter how skilled that you are at making repairs and upgrades. Think long and hard about how you plan on using your boat, test as many different types of boats as you can and do plenty of online research. Here’s a look at some of the most popular types of fishing boats on the market. To learn more and to take a boat for a test ride, come see us at J&B Cycle & Marine in Timmins, Ontario. We’re proud to serve boaters and water sports enthusiasts in Ontario.

Skiffs

A skiff is also known as a flat boat, and it’s a great choice for shallow water conditions. They only go a few inches beneath the water’s surface, and they're tough enough to withstand rocky riverbeds. They don’t have a lot of frills or storage space, but they're definitely a great first boat!

Bass Boats

Bass boats are a great option for seasoned fisherman, and you have so many different options to choose from. If you’re shopping for a bass boat, be sure to choose your features wisely. You can usually count on getting what you pay for, but the most expensive bass boat isn’t always necessarily the best.

Bay Boats

A bay boat is good for deeper water with more chop, and a great choice for a serious fisherman carrying a lot of gear. There are better choices for deep sea fishing, but a bay boat is a versatile craft that’s perfect for day trips in both deep or shallow water.

Center Console Boats

A center console boat doesn’t offer much in the way of sleeping accommodations, but it’s a very versatile option for larger parties on a day trip. You can get your hook wet from anywhere on the large deck, and you'll enjoy a clear and completely unobstructed view!

Pontoon Boats

Pontoon boats are a great way to take the party to the water, and fun for the whole family. They’re not as quick or as specialized as other fishing boats, but most pontoon manufacturers offer great fishing packages in their deck layout options.
